BSE, NSE Closed on October 2 For Gandhi Jayanti: Trading to Resume on Monday, October 5

Last regular trading session before the break is Thursday, October 1.

The Indian stock market will remain closed on Friday, October 2, for Gandhi Jayanti, with both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) suspending regular equity trading. The closure is part of the exchanges' scheduled 2026 trading holidays and means investors will not be able to conduct regular equity transactions on the day. Since October 2 falls on a Friday and is followed by the regular weekend holidays, the closure will give investors a three-day break from regular equity market activity.

Trading on both exchanges will resume on Monday, October 5, after the three-day gap. Thursday, October 1, will be the last regular trading session before the holiday, while October 3 and 4 will be Saturday and Sunday respectively. Gandhi Jayanti is observed on October 2 every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, and the day is included in the official holiday calendar followed by the Indian stock exchanges.

The NSE and BSE will therefore remain closed for regular equity trading on October 2, followed by their normal weekend closure on October 3 and 4. Investors will have to wait until Monday, October 5, for the next regular equity trading session. The three-day gap applies to the regular equity market, with the exchanges' holiday schedules determining when normal trading activity resumes after the public holiday and weekend.

The remaining scheduled trading holidays for 2026 include Dussehra on October 20, Diwali-Balipratipada on November 10, Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev on November 24 and Christmas on December 25. These dates form part of the published holiday schedule for the exchanges. Investors tracking market closures can use the calendar to plan transactions and monitor how holidays and weekends affect the number of available trading sessions during the year.

The exchanges will also observe a holiday for Diwali Laxmi Pujan on November 8, even though the date falls on a Sunday. A special Muhurat Trading session will be conducted on that day in connection with the festival. The timings for the special trading session will be announced separately by the exchanges. Muhurat Trading is a special market session associated with Diwali and is separate from the normal trading schedule followed on regular market days.

The October 2 closure will mark another three-day break in regular equity trading in a relatively short period. The previous such break occurred in September, when the BSE and NSE remained closed from September 12 to 14 because of the weekend and Ganesh Chaturthi holiday. Following the Gandhi Jayanti holiday, regular trading will resume on Monday, October 5, after which the next scheduled market closure will be Dussehra on October 20.
