BRICS Leaders Join PM Modi In Tree Plantation Initiative
BRICS leaders participate in a joint environmental initiative.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders of BRICS member and partner countries participated in a joint tree plantation initiative in New Delhi on Saturday during the 18th BRICS Summit. The leaders gathered at the lawns of Bharat Mandapam, where they also posed for the traditional family photograph after the plantation programme.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali joined Modi at the initiative. Brazil was represented by Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira at the event.
The tree plantation programme came alongside a series of high-level discussions at the summit, which India is hosting in New Delhi. Earlier in the day, BRICS leaders attended a session on inclusive global governance and strengthening multilateralism at Bharat Mandapam. The two-day summit brings together leaders of member countries, partner nations and outreach invitees for discussions on cooperation and global priorities.

During the summit, Modi announced the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Declaration 2026 and launched two postage stamps commemorating 20 years of BRICS. In his closing remarks, he said the declaration provided clear direction to the grouping's shared resolve and stressed the need to translate its decisions into concrete results.
Modi described the discussions among BRICS leaders as meaningful and constructive, noting that the participating countries brought diverse perspectives while maintaining a shared commitment to strengthening cooperation. He also stressed that the changing world order requires improvements in representation, responsiveness and rule-making, while emphasising equal participation for the Global South in shaping future technologies and their rules.
BRICS currently comprises Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. Partner countries include Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. India, a founding member, assumed the BRICS chairship for 2026 on January 1, with the year also marking two decades since the grouping was established.
