Gas leak and fire at ONGC oil well in Andhra Pradesh village forces mass evacuation.
A major gas leak at an ONGC-operated oil well triggered panic and large-scale evacuation in Irusumanda village of Andhra Pradesh’s Konaseema district on Monday. The incident occurred in the Razole area while repair work was underway at the well, which had temporarily halted production, officials said.
According to local authorities, the mishap took place during maintenance operations using a workover rig. A sudden blowout released a massive volume of gas mixed with crude oil, which shot high into the air, creating a dangerous situation for nearby residents.
Soon after the leak, the escaping gas caught fire, leading to flames erupting at the site. Thick clouds of gas and smoke spread across Irusumanda and nearby villages, blanketing the area and severely alarming residents and local officials.

As a precautionary measure, authorities made announcements through loudspeakers advising people in at least three surrounding villages to avoid using electricity, lighting stoves, or switching on appliances to prevent further ignition. Panchayat officials and the local administration urged immediate evacuation to ensure public safety.
Many villagers fled their homes, carrying essential belongings and moving livestock to safer locations as fear spread through the region. The situation remained tense as emergency protocols were activated to prevent further escalation.
ONGC teams rushed to the site to control the gas leak and contain the fire, while the affected area was cordoned off. Senior district officials and ONGC authorities are monitoring the situation closely, with emergency measures in place to safeguard residents and restore normalcy.
