Manipur was struck by two consecutive earthquakes on Wednesday, sending tremors across Northeast India. The first, a 5.7-magnitude quake, hit at 11:06 AM, with its epicentre located 44 km east of Yairipok in Imphal East district, at a depth of 110 km, according to the Regional Seismological Centre in Shillong. A second quake, measuring 4.1 magnitude, followed at 12:20 PM in Kamjong district, at a depth of 66 km.
The tremors rippled through Assam, Meghalaya, and beyond, causing alarm but no immediate reports of casualties. In Manipur, however, the quakes left visible scars—cracks appeared in several buildings, including a school in Wangjing Lamding, Thoubal district, currently serving as a relief camp for those affected by ethnic strife. Social media footage highlighted the damage, amplifying concerns among residents.
Authorities in Imphal are assessing the extent of the destruction. "We are confirming the reports of damage," an official stated. Meanwhile, no significant impact has been reported in other northeastern states. The region, situated in a seismically active zone, remains on edge as officials monitor the situation and urge preparedness for potential aftershocks.
