‘Brain Dead’ Nashik Teen Moves During Funeral Preparations

Teen revives during funeral prep, now on ventilator.

In a startling turn of events in Nashik, Maharashtra, a 19-year-old man, Bhau Lachke, presumed "brain dead" after a severe accident, began moving and coughing during preparations for his funeral, leaving his family in disbelief. The incident, reported on September 5, 2025, has sparked debate over medical diagnoses and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Lachke’s condition.

Lachke, a resident of Trimbakeshwar taluka, sustained critical injuries in a road accident several days ago and was admitted to a private hospital in Adgaon. According to his relative, Gangaram Shinde, doctors at the facility declared Lachke brain dead, prompting the family to begin funeral arrangements. “While we were preparing for his final rites, he suddenly started moving and coughing,” Shinde recounted. “We were shocked and immediately rushed him to the district hospital, where he is now on ventilator support. His condition remains serious.”

The dramatic revival has drawn significant attention, with the family alleging a grave misdiagnosis by the private hospital. Shinde claimed that the hospital’s declaration of brain death led them to believe Lachke had no chance of recovery, causing immense emotional distress as they prepared to bid farewell. The district hospital in Nashik, where Lachke is currently being treated, confirmed that he is under intensive care, with medical teams monitoring his critical condition.

However, the private hospital’s management refuted the family’s claims, asserting that Lachke was never officially declared dead. A hospital spokesperson stated that the family may have misunderstood complex medical terminology, such as “brain death,” which refers to the irreversible loss of brain function but does not always equate to clinical death. “The patient was in a critical state, and we communicated his condition to the family. There was no declaration of death,” the spokesperson said, adding that they are cooperating with any inquiries into the matter.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media and among local communities, with many questioning the accuracy of medical assessments in private healthcare facilities. In Maharashtra, where road accidents account for over 13,000 deaths annually according to 2024 state data, timely and accurate medical diagnoses are critical. The case has also highlighted the emotional toll on families navigating life-and-death decisions based on medical advice.

Local authorities have been alerted, and an investigation may be launched to clarify the circumstances surrounding the hospital’s prognosis. Meanwhile, Lachke’s family remains hopeful for his recovery, keeping vigil at the district hospital. “We thought we had lost him,” Shinde said, “but this feels like a miracle. We just want him to get better.”

This extraordinary case underscores the complexities of medical diagnoses and the profound impact of hope and resilience in the face of tragedy, as Nashik’s medical community and residents rally around the young man’s fight for survival.
