Bonanza for Indian MP's!! Salaries, Allowances and Pensions Hiked

Government Boosts Salaries, Allowances, and Pensions for Indian MPs

The Central Government has rolled out a significant hike in the salaries, allowances, and pensions for Members of Parliament (MPs), effective retroactively from April 1, 2023, according to a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs on Monday.

This revision, aligning with the Cost Inflation Index under the Income-tax Act, 1961, marks the first adjustment since 2018 and comes amid the ongoing Budget Session.

The monthly salary for Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs has been increased by 24%, rising from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.24 lakh. Daily allowances have also been bumped up from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500, providing additional support during parliamentary duties.

For former MPs, pensions have been raised from Rs 25,000 to Rs 31,000 per month, with the additional pension for each year of service beyond five years climbing from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500.

This move builds on the framework set by the Salary, Allowances, and Pension of Members of Parliament Act, 1954, amended in 2018 to link such revisions to inflation every five years.

Beyond the base salary, MPs currently receive Rs 70,000 as a constituency allowance and Rs 60,000 for office expenses—amounts likely to see proportional increases—along with perks like 34 free domestic flights annually, first-class train travel, and free housing in Delhi. The hike aims to address rising costs while supporting MPs in their roles.

The decision has sparked mixed reactions, with some lauding it as overdue amid inflation, while others question its timing and scale during economic recovery efforts.

As Parliament debates its merits, the enhanced payouts underscore the government’s bid to balance legislative welfare with fiscal realities.
