Bomb Threat Emails Trigger Evacuation of Bombay High Court, Other Courts
Multiple Mumbai courts cleared after coordinated hoax email threats.
The iconic Bombay High Court in south Mumbai, along with several other judicial premises across the city including Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Andheri Court, Esplanade (Fort) Court complex, and even facilities in Nagpur, faced a major security alert on the morning of December 18, 2025, after receiving anonymous bomb threat emails, leading to immediate and widespread evacuations to ensure the safety of all personnel and visitors.
Authorities swiftly activated standard operating procedures upon notification of the threats, deploying specialized teams comprising Mumbai Police, Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads (BDDS), anti-sabotage units, dog squads, and additional security personnel to conduct exhaustive searches throughout the affected court buildings, encompassing courtrooms, judges' chambers, administrative sections, libraries, and peripheral areas.
The evacuation process involved the orderly removal of hundreds of occupants, including honourable judges, practising advocates, court registry staff, litigants awaiting hearings, and general visitors, with internal directives from the Chief Justice instructing benches to adjourn proceedings and assemble in secure locations, resulting in the complete suspension of judicial activities until clearance was obtained.

Extensive multi-hour inspections utilizing state-of-the-art detection technology and manual verifications yielded no trace of suspicious objects or explosive materials at any of the locations, prompting law enforcement to officially classify the incidents as hoaxes while maintaining heightened vigilance across the judicial complexes.
With the premises thoroughly sanitized and declared fully safe, court operations progressively resumed in the afternoon—many from around 3 PM onward—demonstrating the robustness of emergency response mechanisms, as Mumbai Police initiated a formal investigation, including registration of an FIR against unidentified perpetrators, to trace the email origins, identify motives, and prevent future disruptions to the administration of justice.
