Boat Capsizes In Yamuna River; Six Missing, Three Rescued In Uttar Pradesh

Six missing after boat capsizes in Yamuna River

Six people remain missing after a boat carrying nine passengers submerged in the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district, while three others were rescued safely, officials said on Wednesday. Rescue operations involving multiple agencies are currently underway at the site. According to District Magistrate Abhishek Goyal, the incident occurred when the boat, which had originated from Ghatampur, began taking in water and submerged in the river. Local villagers and police teams rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the accident and immediately launched search efforts in coordination with district authorities.

Goyal confirmed that three passengers managed to survive the incident and were rescued shortly after the boat went down. The remaining six individuals are still missing despite ongoing search efforts. He said specialised teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and flood relief units have been deployed to assist in the operation. SDRF teams were among the first to arrive, while additional reinforcements were sent to the location.

Preliminary information suggests that the passengers were returning from a routine journey that had been delayed. The boatman, who survived the incident, reportedly told officials that the vessel did not capsize but gradually submerged in the river. He added that some passengers who knew how to swim were able to save themselves, while others were swept away in the strong current. Officials have confirmed that among the missing are five children and one woman. BJP MLA Manoj Prajapati stated that the administration is fully engaged in rescue efforts and that multiple SDRF teams are actively involved in the search. He also said that a detailed report on the incident will be submitted to the state government.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Banda Range, Rajesh Yash, also confirmed that nine people were on board the boat at the time of the incident. He reiterated that three individuals survived by swimming to safety, while six remain unaccounted for. He added that district administration officials, police personnel, and disaster response teams are continuing coordinated search operations along the river.

The incident has drawn attention to river safety concerns in the region, where seasonal water levels and inadequate transport safety measures have led to repeated accidents in the past. Authorities have stated that rescue operations will continue through the night until all missing persons are located.
