BJP’s Telangana Rise: Rao Eyes 2028 Power

Vote share soars from 13.9% to 36%

Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao declared the party a formidable force in the state, citing its vote share surge from 13.9% in the 2023 Assembly elections to over 36% in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, securing eight of 17 parliamentary seats. Speaking at an event welcoming former MLA Guvvala Balraju into the BJP fold, Rao urged intellectuals, lawyers, farmers, women, youth, and students to join the party to drive it to power in the 2028 Assembly elections.

Rao, who assumed the BJP Telangana presidency on July 1, 2025, praised Balraju’s decision to join, attributing it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governance and national development initiatives. Balraju, a two-time MLA from Achampet in Nagarkurnool, is expected to bolster the party’s presence, particularly in southern Telangana, where BJP seeks to expand beyond its northern strongholds like Karimnagar and Nizamabad. “Balraju’s experience will strengthen our grassroots network,” Rao said, highlighting the party’s 40-lakh membership base and 25,000 booth committees across 30,000 polling booths.

The BJP’s growth, Rao claimed, stems from its focus on development, Hindutva ideology, and dissatisfaction with the Congress-led government under Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. He criticized Reddy’s frequent Delhi visits, urging him to address local issues like Hyderabad’s traffic chaos after rains and unfulfilled promises, such as the six guarantee schemes. “Congress and BRS have failed Telangana’s aspirations. BJP offers effective governance,” Rao asserted, ruling out any alliance with BRS despite speculation.

The party’s 2023 Assembly election gains, winning eight seats in districts like Nirmal, Sirpur, and Kamareddy, were driven by a 20%+ vote share increase in 15 constituencies, fueled by leaders like Bandi Sanjay Kumar and Eatala Rajender. The 2024 Lok Sabha success, adding seats in Chevella, Medak, Malkajgiri, and Mahbubnagar, reflects BJP’s expansion into western and southern Telangana, capitalizing on BRS’s decline. Rao aims to further strengthen weaker districts like Nalgonda, Khammam, and Warangal, focusing on farmers’ issues and urban concerns like rising education and healthcare costs.

With a robust organizational push, including a membership drive surpassing 35 lakh, Rao is confident of challenging Congress and BRS in upcoming local body elections, positioning BJP as Telangana’s alternative for comprehensive development.
