BJP’s Big Plan for Tripura’s Tribals: Shah Meets Leaders
Tripura BJP discusses tribal development with Amit Shah.
In a significant move to bolster socio-economic progress in Tripura, a delegation of BJP tribal leaders met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, to strategize on uplifting the state’s indigenous communities. The meeting, led by Tripura BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee, focused on accelerating development initiatives for the tribal population, which constitutes one-third of Tripura’s population and resides in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) areas, covering two-thirds of the state’s geographic expanse.
The discussions come at a crucial time as the BJP aims to strengthen its Janajati Morcha, the party’s tribal wing, ahead of the TTAADC elections scheduled for early 2026. Bhattacharjee, who also heads the Janajati Morcha, emphasized the party’s commitment to delivering maximum benefits to the tribal communities. “Our goal is to ensure that the indigenous people of Tripura see tangible improvements in their quality of life,” he said, highlighting a Rs 1,400 crore World Bank-aided project currently underway to drive socio-economic development in tribal-dominated areas.
The meeting, attended by Union Commerce and Industries Minister Piyush Goyal and the BJP’s northeast coordinator Sambit Patra, covered a wide range of issues, from infrastructure development to economic empowerment and social welfare programs tailored for the tribal population. The leaders held in-depth discussions on how to expedite these initiatives, ensuring that funds and resources are effectively utilized to uplift the TTAADC regions.

The TTAADC, which has been governed by the Tipra Motha Party—a BJP ally since 2024—since 2021, plays a pivotal role in addressing the needs of Tripura’s tribal communities. The BJP’s renewed focus on the region signals a strategic push to consolidate its influence among tribal voters ahead of the upcoming elections. Sources within the party revealed that the talks with Shah also touched on strengthening grassroots organizational efforts to ensure the Janajati Morcha’s initiatives resonate with local communities.
Adding to the momentum, Bhattacharjee recently met with BJP national general secretary BL Santosh to discuss organizational strategies for the Janajati Morcha. These efforts reflect the party’s broader vision to align development goals with political outreach, ensuring that tribal communities are at the forefront of Tripura’s growth story.
Local leaders in Tripura have welcomed the BJP’s proactive approach. “This meeting with Amit Shah shows the party’s seriousness about tribal welfare,” said a TTAADC council member, who requested anonymity. “The World Bank project, combined with the BJP’s focus, could bring transformative change to our areas if implemented effectively.”
The BJP’s emphasis on socio-economic development is expected to include improvements in education, healthcare, and employment opportunities for the tribal population, alongside infrastructure projects like better roads and connectivity in the TTAADC areas. As the state gears up for the elections, the party’s outreach to tribal communities could prove to be a game-changer in shaping Tripura’s political and developmental landscape.
