Biren Vaishnav sworn in as Gujarat Lokayukta.

Retired Gujarat High Court judge Justice Biren Aniruddh Vaishnav was on Wednesday sworn in as the Lokayukta of Gujarat at a formal ceremony held at Lok Bhavan in Gandhinagar. The oath of office was administered by Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat, marking his official assumption of charge as the state’s anti-corruption ombudsman.

The ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat Assembly Speaker Shankar Chaudhary, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, members of the state cabinet, and senior administrative officials. Following the oath-taking, the Governor, Chief Minister, and other dignitaries extended their congratulations to Justice Vaishnav on his appointment to the constitutional post.

The Lokayukta institution in Gujarat is responsible for investigating allegations of corruption and maladministration involving public servants and government authorities. The appointment is considered significant as it fills a key oversight role aimed at strengthening transparency and accountability in public administration.

Justice Vaishnav served as a judge of the Gujarat High Court from April 2016 until his retirement in May 2025. He was initially appointed as an additional judge on April 6, 2016, and was confirmed as a permanent judge in March 2018. During his judicial tenure, he handled a broad range of cases, including service law disputes, administrative matters, and constitutional issues.

He also functioned as Acting Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court on multiple occasions earlier this year during the leave period of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal. His administrative responsibilities included handling matters related to judicial functioning in the absence of the Chief Justice.

Over the years, Justice Vaishnav delivered several notable rulings related to government employees and administrative procedures, including observations in a 2022 judgment that medical reimbursement claims of government employees should not be rejected mechanically. His appointment as Lokayukta is expected to bring his judicial experience to the state’s anti-corruption framework.
