Biocon's Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw Slams NHAI Over Bengaluru's Hosur Road, Gets a Response

Biocon's Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw publicly criticised NH44's upkeep, prompting a rare NHAI reply.

A public criticism by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw over the poor condition of Hosur Road has triggered a response from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), bringing renewed focus to infrastructure concerns in the city. The issue revolves around National Highway 44 (NH-44), a crucial arterial stretch that connects Bengaluru to key industrial and IT zones. The road is heavily used by daily commuters, making its condition a matter of public importance. The exchange has sparked wider discussions about infrastructure quality in India’s major urban centres.

Mazumdar-Shaw took to social media platform X to sharply criticise the condition of the highway, calling it “shoddy and ill-maintained.” She pointed out issues such as poorly designed medians, substandard barricades, and the lack of asphalted shoulders along the stretch. Highlighting the contrast with NHAI’s claims of world-class infrastructure, she questioned why such a vital corridor continues to suffer from neglect. In her post, she also tagged Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, seeking accountability and immediate attention. Her remarks quickly gained traction among commuters and civic observers.

The criticism reflects long-standing frustrations among Bengaluru residents who rely on Hosur Road for daily travel. As one of the busiest IT corridors in the country, the stretch sees significant traffic from professionals, logistics operators, and intercity travellers. Persistent issues such as poor maintenance, congestion, and safety hazards have been flagged repeatedly over the years. Mazumdar-Shaw emphasised that despite several complaints, there has been little visible improvement. This has raised broader concerns about the responsiveness of authorities to public grievances.

Responding to the criticism, the National Highways Authority of India stated that it has taken note of the concerns raised and will examine the issues. While the agency did not immediately outline specific corrective steps, its response indicates that the matter is under review. The development highlights the role of public figures in drawing attention to civic issues through digital platforms. It also underscores the increasing expectation for transparency and timely action from infrastructure authorities. The situation will likely be monitored closely by commuters and stakeholders.

The episode once again places the spotlight on infrastructure challenges in rapidly expanding cities like Bengaluru. With growing population and vehicular density, maintaining key road networks has become critical for economic efficiency and quality of life. Experts often stress the need for better planning, regular maintenance, and accountability mechanisms in urban infrastructure management. Public interventions such as this can act as catalysts for change if followed by concrete action. The coming weeks may reveal whether the concerns raised translate into meaningful improvements on the ground.
