Bihar Police Officer Suspended After Threatening Distressed Flood Victims At Gunpoint

Bihar cop suspended for pointing pistol.

The station house officer of Maker Police Station has been suspended after a video surfaced showing him allegedly brandishing a pistol at people during the distribution of flood relief materials in the district. The action was ordered by the Saran Senior Superintendent of Police following the rapid circulation of the footage on social media platforms. Sangram Kumar Singh, a police sub-inspector who was serving as the station house officer at Maker, was placed under suspension with immediate effect.

An official statement issued on Sunday stated that the video purported to show him pointing his service pistol towards members of the public while relief supplies were being distributed. The statement characterised the officer’s conduct, on a prima facie assessment, as reflecting “gross negligence of duty, indiscipline and arbitrariness.” During the period of suspension, Singh will remain entitled to a subsistence allowance in accordance with service rules, and his headquarters have been fixed pending further departmental examination of the matter. The incident took place while flood-relief operations were under way in the Maker Police Station area.

Bihar has been dealing with significant flooding after heavy rainfall in Nepal and adjoining regions in the final week of September. Official figures indicate that nearly 9.87 lakh people across 169 gram panchayats in 30 blocks of six districts have been affected. The impacted districts are Saran, West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur. In such circumstances, the distribution of relief materials is a critical part of the administrative response, requiring coordination between civil authorities, police and local communities.

The emergence of the video prompted swift administrative action. The Saran SSP’s office moved to suspend the officer once the footage became widely available, signalling an intent to address the alleged lapse without delay. Police personnel involved in disaster-relief duties are expected to maintain composure and professionalism, particularly when interacting with people who may already be under stress due to displacement or loss of livelihood. The decision to place the station house officer under suspension pending inquiry is consistent with standard procedures when video evidence of alleged misconduct surfaces in the public domain.

Further departmental proceedings are expected to examine the full sequence of events captured in the recording, including the context in which the pistol was drawn and the precise circumstances surrounding the distribution activity. In the meantime, relief operations continue across the flood-affected districts as authorities work to reach the large number of people in need of assistance. The suspension of the Maker Police Station officer has drawn attention to the standards of conduct required of law-enforcement personnel during emergency responses and to the role of publicly available video evidence in prompting accountability measures.
