Bihar Home Portfolio Handed to Samrat Chaudhary, Signals “Yogi Model” Policing

Bihar unleashes tough anti-crime measures under new leadership.

The transfer of the Home portfolio to Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Samrat Chaudhary has sparked intense speculation that Bihar is set to adopt the hardline “Yogi Model” of crime control made famous in Uttar Pradesh. Within hours of assuming charge, Chaudhary declared the immediate formation of Anti-Romeo Squads and the deployment of bulldozers to demolish properties belonging to identified criminals, marking a decisive shift toward visible and aggressive law enforcement in the state.

Emulating the Uttar Pradesh template, dedicated Anti-Romeo Squads comprising police personnel will be stationed outside schools, colleges, and public places to curb eve-teasing and harassment of women. Simultaneously, the government has identified approximately 400 mafia gangs operating across Bihar, and authorities have been directed to seize their assets and raze illegally constructed houses using bulldozers. The ruling NDA has defended the measures as essential for restoring law and order, while Opposition parties have denounced them as extra-judicial and politically motivated.

In a parallel development that has reignited the debate over dynastic politics, Deepak Prakash, son of Rajya Sabha MP and Rashtriya Lok Morcha president Upendra Kushwaha, was sworn in as a minister in the newly formed NDA Cabinet despite neither contesting the recent Assembly elections nor being a member of the Bihar Legislative Council. The induction of Prakash alongside 25 other ministers has drawn sharp criticism and underscored the persistent influence of political families in the state’s power structure.

On the economic front, sugarcane farmers across Bihar are celebrating a major decision by the new Cabinet to establish 25 new sugar mills and constitute a high-level committee, headed by the Chief Secretary, to revive long-closed mills. The move fulfills electoral promises made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the campaign, and assumes added significance amid the central government’s aggressive push for ethanol production to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

With rising global and domestic demand for ethanol as a green biofuel, sugarcane has emerged as the primary raw material for its production. The revival and expansion of sugar mills is expected to substantially boost farmers’ income, ensure timely payment of dues, and strengthen rural economies in northern and central Bihar, where sugarcane cultivation dominates the agricultural landscape.
