Bihar Govt Renames Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park As Patna Zoo

The Bihar government has approved the removal of Sanjay Gandhi’s name from two prominent institutions in Patna—the state zoo and a dairy technology institute—marking a significant renaming decision by the state cabinet. The move was cleared during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.

Under the decision, the well-known Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park will now officially be called “Patna Zoo,” a name already widely used informally by residents. The change also extends to the governing body of the zoo, which has been renamed accordingly.

In a similar move, the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Dairy Technology has been renamed as the “Bihar State Institute of Dairy Technology, Patna.” The institute, which operates under the state’s animal and fisheries resources framework, offers professional courses in dairy engineering, microbiology, and business management.

Officials said the decision was part of a broader set of approvals taken during the cabinet meeting, which also included infrastructure and administrative proposals. The renaming reflects an effort by the current administration to revise institutional identities across the state.

The Patna zoo, one of eastern India’s major wildlife parks, has been a key conservation and recreational site for decades, housing hundreds of animal species and attracting large numbers of visitors annually. The dairy institute, established in 1980, has similarly played an important role in technical education and research in Bihar’s agricultural sector.

The decision is likely to draw political attention, given Sanjay Gandhi’s historical association with the Emergency era. However, the state government has positioned the move as an administrative update aligned with its current policy priorities and governance approach.
