Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Enters World Book of Records for 10th Oath as Chief Minister

Nitish Kumar globally honoured for unprecedented 10-time chief ministerial swearing-in.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has secured a unique place in global history by becoming the only political leader in independent India to be sworn in as chief minister of any state for a record tenth time, earning formal induction into the prestigious World Book of Records, London, for this unparalleled feat of democratic longevity.

In an official communication, the London-based organisation declared that between 1947 and 2025 no individual across India’s 28 states and eight Union territories has taken the oath of chief minister on ten separate occasions. It described Kumar’s journey as an extraordinary testament to sustained public trust, political resilience and visionary governance that has set a new benchmark in the world’s largest democracy.

The citation specifically praised Nitish Kumar’s decades-long contributions to infrastructure development, social welfare schemes, women’s empowerment and administrative stability in one of India’s most challenging states, stating that leading Bihar across ten distinct terms transcends personal achievement and stands as a moment of national pride that will inspire generations of leaders and citizens alike.

Reacting to the honour, JD(U) national spokesperson and MLC Neeraj Kumar termed it a historic validation of Nitish Kumar’s transformative leadership, noting that the Bihar CM has now surpassed every contemporary and predecessor to become the longest-serving chief minister in the state’s history while also holding the national record for the highest number of separate terms.

While leaders such as Sikkim’s Pawan Kumar Chamling (over 24 years continuous), Odisha’s Naveen Patnaik, West Bengal’s Jyoti Basu and Tamil Nadu’s M Karunanidhi are celebrated for cumulative tenure, Nitish Kumar’s ten distinct oaths—spanning alliances, ideological shifts and electoral cycles—remain unmatched; the World Book of Records will formally present the official certificate recognising this singular political endurance in the coming weeks.
