Bihar Cabinet Sanctions Sonepur Greenfield Airport Project

State government approves new airport in Sonepur, allocates funds for land acquisition.

The Bihar government has approved the construction of a greenfield airport in Sonepur, clearing a major infrastructure proposal aimed at boosting regional connectivity and economic activity in the state. The Cabinet sanctioned ₹1,302 crore for land acquisition for the project, marking a key financial commitment toward developing the new aviation hub.

Officials said the proposed Sonepur greenfield airport is intended to decongest existing facilities and improve air connectivity for residents of Saran district and adjoining regions. The project is expected to facilitate passenger and cargo movement, strengthen tourism potential, and provide an alternative access point to Patna, which currently relies on limited airport capacity.

According to state authorities, the approved funds will be primarily used to acquire land required for runway development, terminal infrastructure, and ancillary facilities. The airport is expected to be developed in coordination with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), which oversees the planning and management of civil aviation infrastructure across the country.

The move aligns with the Centre’s broader regional connectivity push under schemes such as UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik), aimed at making air travel more accessible to smaller cities. Bihar has in recent years sought to expand its aviation footprint, with upgrades and proposals underway for multiple airstrips and new terminals across the state.

Government officials indicated that detailed project reports and statutory clearances will follow the land acquisition process. If executed on schedule, the Sonepur airport could emerge as a strategic addition to Bihar’s transport network, supporting trade, investment, and employment generation in the region.
