Bhavani River Rising! Flood Alert Issued

People near riverbanks told to evacuate with belongings.

A high-alert flood warning was issued Tuesday morning for residents living along the banks of the Bhavani River in Tamil Nadu, as heavy inflows from upstream dams threaten to unleash surplus water from the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) Reservoir.

Public Works and Revenue Department officials stated that with continuous rainfall and increased inflows from Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts, the LBP dam is nearing its threshold. As of 8 am, the dam was receiving 6,937 cusecs of water, with the water level rising to 101.71 feet just shy of its full capacity of 105 feet. The storage stood at 30.08 TMC against its full limit of 32.8 TMC.

Authorities warned that once the water level touches 102 feet, surplus water will be released downstream. Residents in Bhavanisagar, Sathyamangalam, Gobichettipalayam, and Bhavani have been advised to move to safer locations along with their cattle and belongings to avoid any potential disaster.

Currently, 2,800 cusecs of water are being released, with allocations including 1,500 cusecs to the LBP canal, 800 to Thadapalli and Arakkankottai canals, 400 to the Kalingarayan canal, and 100 cusecs into the Bhavani River to meet drinking water needs in surrounding areas.

Police and revenue officials are closely monitoring the situation, visiting vulnerable areas and assisting residents with evacuation efforts.
