Bengaluru To Get 15-Year Development Roadmap Under Shivakumar’s Long-Term Urban Plan

Bengaluru’s long-term development will be guided by a 15-year roadmap.

Karnataka is preparing a comprehensive 10-15-year development roadmap for the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region (BMR), with a focus on transportation, housing, water supply, industrial growth and civic infrastructure. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced the plan during a meeting of the advisory committee on the economic development of the BMR at his official residence. The long-term strategy is being aligned with Karnataka’s target of expanding its economy to $400-420 billion by 2037 and $1 trillion by 2047.

The government plans to establish nine integrated industrial townships across the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region to support industrial expansion and employment generation. Shivakumar said 7,900 acres of land had already been acquired for the projects, while the acquisition of another 5,600 acres was underway. The state is also developing plans for an AI City in the Bengaluru region, with the Chief Minister directing officials to study the model of Punggol in Singapore. An AI university has also been proposed, for which officials have been asked to identify a suitable location.

Transportation is a major component of the proposed roadmap, with plans to expand the Metro network by another 312 km by 2037. A 72-km suburban rail network is also proposed to improve connectivity between Bengaluru and surrounding areas. The meeting discussed a 210-km circular road connecting 10 major hubs around the city, along with a proposal to link Phase 2 of the Peripheral Ring Road with NICE Road. A 270-km Regional Rapid Transit System corridor connecting Bengaluru with Tumakuru, Mysuru and KGF was also discussed.

Water management is another key priority, with the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region expected to require around 3,600 million litres per day by 2037. Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said the entire Bengaluru Urban district would be brought under the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board in phases to facilitate systematic development of water distribution and sewerage infrastructure. The government also plans to identify the complete road network in the district and develop measures for treated wastewater reuse and lake rejuvenation. Shivakumar said long-term planning must account for both residential and industrial water requirements.

Housing has also been included in the development strategy to meet the needs of the region’s growing population. The government has prepared a plan to construct between six lakh and 6.5 lakh houses, with affordable housing identified as a priority. Around 40,000 to 50,000 of the proposed units are expected to be designated for workers employed in industries. Shivakumar also said all areas of Bengaluru Urban district would eventually be brought under urban local bodies to support planned development and improve civic service delivery. The proposed transport, housing, water, industrial and civic projects are intended to be coordinated as part of an integrated long-term plan for Bengaluru’s expansion.
