Bengaluru Sets Record With Three Heart Transplants In 12 Hours

The Narayana Health team performs three life-saving heart transplants in a single day.

Narayana Health City in Bengaluru achieved a historic milestone by successfully performing three heart transplants within 12 hours, a first in India, saving the lives of three men in their mid-30s. The surgeries, conducted on September 9, 2025, highlight the advanced capabilities of Narayana Health’s Heart Failure and Transplant Programme, one of the largest in the country, and underscore the critical role of organ donation.

The recipients, who had been waiting over a year for suitable donors, faced rising lung pressure that threatened their eligibility for transplantation. Donor hearts were retrieved from Sparsh Hospital in Yelahanka, Aster CMI Hospital in Hebbal, and Manipal Hospital on Old Airport Road. Green corridors facilitated by Bengaluru Traffic Police and Jeevan Sarthakathe (SOTTO – State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation) ensured swift transport to Narayana Health City. A multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and critical-care specialists worked in seamless coordination to execute the back-to-back procedures.

“This milestone reflects the medical excellence of our team and the vital support of donor families and public coordination,” said Dr. Varun Shetty, senior consultant cardiac surgeon at Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences. “These transplants reaffirm the transformative impact of organ donation.” All three patients are stable and recovering under close monitoring, marking a triumph for the hospital’s comprehensive heart failure care, which includes ECMO and ventricular assist technologies.
