Bengaluru Police Book School Staff After Student's Suicide Attempt Over Punishment
Bengaluru schoolboy attempts suicide after alleged punishment; FIR filed against staff.
A 13-year-old student allegedly attempted suicide after being punished at a private school in west Bengaluru, prompting police to register a First Information Report (FIR) against the school principal, secretary and teachers. According to police, the boy is undergoing treatment at a hospital, and doctors have described the next 48 hours as critical. The incident has sparked an investigation into the school's disciplinary practices and allegations made by the student's family.
Police said the incident followed an altercation between the student and one of his classmates on Tuesday. The boy's family alleged that, as punishment, his class teacher made him stand outside the classroom from morning until evening. After returning home later that day, the family said the student allegedly attempted suicide. He was immediately taken to a hospital, where he remains under medical care.
In the complaint filed with police, the boy's father alleged that his son had been subjected to repeated harassment by school staff over the past several months. He further claimed that the child had complained of being subjected to casteist slurs and had become increasingly reluctant to attend school. According to the complaint, the family had persuaded him to continue attending classes for the remainder of the academic term, assuring him that they would transfer him to another school afterwards.

Based on the complaint, police have registered a case against the school's principal, secretary and teachers under provisions relating to voluntarily causing hurt and cruelty to a child, among other applicable sections. Investigators are examining the family's allegations and gathering statements from school staff, students and other witnesses to determine the circumstances that led to the incident.
The authorities are also expected to review the school's disciplinary procedures and verify the allegations of harassment and discriminatory remarks made in the complaint. Officials have not yet commented on whether evidence has been found to support the claims, and the school administration has not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of reporting.
The case has drawn attention to concerns surrounding student welfare, school discipline and the handling of complaints involving children. Police said the investigation is ongoing and that further action will depend on the evidence collected. Meanwhile, the student's family continues to await updates on his medical condition as he remains under treatment.
