BCI Co-Chair Demands Manan Mishra’s Resignation Over Alleged Governance Irregularities
BCI co-chair alleges appointments and fund diversion.
Bar Council of India (BCI) co-chairman Reddy has sought the resignation of BCI chairman Manan Mishra, citing allegations concerning family-linked appointments and diversion of funds. In a letter dated August 22 addressed to Mishra, Reddy called for an independent inquiry into the issues raised and demanded that a special meeting of the BCI be convened to consider the allegations. Reddy's communication comes in his capacity as an elected member of the BCI and its co-chairman.
The allegations concern the functioning and administration of the statutory body that oversees legal education and professional standards for advocates in India. The letter, as reported by Live Law, raises questions about appointments allegedly involving family connections as well as the handling and diversion of funds. In the letter, Reddy urged Mishra to step down from his position while an independent inquiry examines the allegations.
He also called for a special meeting of the BCI to discuss the issues and determine what action, if any, should be taken. The demands place the allegations within the BCI's institutional framework and seek scrutiny through the body's formal mechanisms. Addressing Mishra directly, Reddy said he was writing not as an adversary but as an elected member of the Bar Council of India, its co-chairman and a member of the legal profession for more than three decades.

The statement appeared intended to underline his position within the organisation and his stated interest in raising the concerns through the council's institutional process. The allegations have not, on the basis of the information available, been established as fact, and an independent inquiry sought by Reddy would be required to examine the claims and determine whether any wrongdoing occurred. The letter itself represents allegations and demands for investigation rather than a finding of misconduct against Mishra or any other individual.
Reddy's call for a special BCI meeting could now bring the allegations before the council's members for consideration. Any subsequent inquiry or proceedings would be expected to examine the claims concerning appointments and funds and provide an opportunity for the allegations to be addressed through the appropriate institutional process. Further developments will depend on how the BCI responds to the resignation demand and the request for an independent investigation.
