Bay of Bengal Deep Depression Weakens, Heads Toward North Sri Lanka Coast

Deep depression over Bay of Bengal to weaken into a depression and cross north Sri Lanka coast on Saturday.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has said that a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to weaken into a depression and cross the north Sri Lanka coast on Saturday. The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and make landfall between Trincomalee and Jaffna. Weather officials noted that although the system is weakening, it continues to influence weather conditions along the Tamil Nadu coast. Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious.

Due to the impact of the weather system, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places across several districts of Tamil Nadu. These include Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Ramanathapuram. Localised flooding and waterlogging cannot be ruled out in low-lying areas. Residents have been advised to follow weather updates closely.

According to the latest bulletin, the depression was located around 100 km northeast of Batticaloa and 100 km east of Trincomalee in Sri Lanka. It was also positioned about 370 km southeast of Karaikal and nearly 550 km south-southeast of Chennai. Meteorologists said the system is expected to weaken further within the next six hours. Its gradual movement is likely to reduce intensity but still cause rainfall over coastal and interior regions.

Sea conditions are expected to remain very rough over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of the Indian Ocean. The Met office warned that conditions would be hazardous on Saturday before improving gradually. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. Those already at deep sea have been asked to avoid the southeast and southwest Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar and Comorin areas.

In the past 24 hours, light rainfall of around 1 cm was recorded in Tiruvadanai in Ramanathapuram, Ayinkudi in Pudukottai and Grand Anicut in Thanjavur. For Chennai and surrounding areas, the weather department forecast cloudy skies with light rain in some parts. Officials said further advisories would be issued if the system changes course or intensity. Residents are advised to remain alert until conditions stabilise.
