Banners Proclaiming DK Shivakumar As Next Karnataka CM Surface On 64th Birthday

Banners at birthday celebrations fuel speculation over DK Shivakumar’s CM prospects.

Posters and banners projecting Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar as the “next Chief Minister” surfaced in Bengaluru and other parts of the state on the occasion of his 64th birthday, triggering fresh political discussion within the ruling Congress party. The visuals appeared in several public locations, despite Shivakumar’s earlier appeal to supporters to avoid putting up birthday-related hoardings.

According to reports, the banners featured congratulatory messages along with slogans referring to Shivakumar as the “future Chief Minister,” reflecting ongoing speculation about leadership dynamics within the Karnataka Congress unit. The displays were particularly visible in Bengaluru and Belagavi, where supporters also gathered to extend birthday wishes.

The development comes amid continued political chatter over an alleged informal understanding within the Congress regarding a possible leadership transition in Karnataka. While Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has repeatedly stated that he intends to complete his full term, sections within the party and among supporters of Shivakumar have periodically pushed narratives suggesting a future change in leadership.

Shivakumar, who also serves as the state Congress president, has in the past expressed displeasure over unauthorized banners and hoardings, calling them unnecessary and a violation of civic rules. On his birthday, he reportedly reiterated that he had instructed supporters not to engage in such displays, and that municipal authorities had already removed several unauthorized posters across the city.

The incident has once again highlighted internal perceptions and public signaling within Karnataka’s political landscape, where leadership succession in the Congress remains a subject of speculation despite repeated assurances of unity from senior leaders. Political observers note that such public displays often reflect grassroots sentiment and factional support within parties, even when official positions remain unchanged.

Overall, the birthday banners have added fresh momentum to the ongoing discussion around Karnataka’s political leadership, underscoring the continued visibility of DK Shivakumar as a key figure in the state’s power equations.
