Bangladesh PM Urges Citizens to Support Government While Spreading Eid Joy

Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman wishes citizens on Eid, urging support for nation-building and unity.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman extended Eid greetings to citizens across Bangladesh while calling for public support to help his government build a “desired Bangladesh,” local media reported. Speaking at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka, Rahman urged people to back his administration’s efforts and offered prayers for the nation’s progress.

“On this Eid day, I pray to Almighty Allah to bless us so that we can build the Bangladesh people expect. If we have your support, this elected government will do its utmost to build the country in line with your expectations,” Rahman said, according to the Bangladesh media outlet UNB.

The Prime Minister also paid homage to those who sacrificed their lives or were injured during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War and during the mass demonstrations of July 2024, highlighting the importance of remembering the nation’s struggles while celebrating the festival.

Earlier in the day, Rahman greeted members of the diplomatic corps, politicians, distinguished citizens, and people from various walks of life at Jamuna. Both the President, Mohammed Shahabuddin, and the Prime Minister offered prayers at the main congregation at the National Eidgah in Dhaka, marking the largest religious gathering of Muslims during Eid-ul-Fitr.

Eid celebrations were observed with enthusiasm and religious fervour across the country, while law enforcement agencies, including the police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), stepped up security to prevent any untoward incidents. Meanwhile, the opposition and Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman raised concerns over hardships faced by passengers during Eid travel, particularly regarding excessive fares.

Speaking from Mirpur after offering prayers, the Jamaat chief described the travel difficulties as “inhumane” and a “crime against humanity,” noting that low-income earners faced particular hardships in returning to their villages. He also criticised BNP government ministers for failing to ensure smooth Eid travel, calling the situation a national “embarrassment.”
