Baba Ramdev Explains His Interpretation Of Vande Mataram And Bharat Mata

Baba Ramdev distinguishes Bharat Mata from Hindu goddesses in Vande Mataram debate.

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Sunday said the national song 'Vande Mataram' represents devotion to Bharat Mata and should not be interpreted as direct worship of Hindu goddesses. Speaking to reporters at an event in Haridwar, Ramdev said references associated with figures such as Durga and Lakshmi should be understood in the broader context of Bharat Mata as a symbol of the country's faith, knowledge and national identity.

Ramdev argued that interpreting the song as an act of worship directed specifically towards Hindu deities or temples reflects a lack of understanding of its meaning and cultural context. He maintained that Bharat Mata represents devotion, duty, purpose and aspiration for the people of the country. His remarks come amid a wider controversy surrounding the rendition and interpretation of the full version of 'Vande Mataram'.

The Yoga guru also addressed questions about student protests, stating that children should not be encouraged to participate in demonstrations. He argued that minors should not be pushed into protests or asked to participate in actions against government officials. At the same time, he maintained that adults above 18 years who believe an injustice has occurred should have the right to raise their voice against it.

Ramdev also spoke about caste-related discrimination and constitutional rights, arguing that no person should be insulted because of their caste. He referred to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Brahmins while making the point that discrimination or abuse based on caste should not be accepted. He also said that he would not allow what he described as walls of hatred to exist in the country.

On governance, Ramdev praised Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami for implementing the Uniform Civil Code in the state. He advocated equal access to healthcare, education and constitutional rights for people across the country. Ramdev also referred to what he described as reforms in education, healthcare, agriculture, the economy and democratic institutions while discussing the government's work.

Ramdev's remarks also come days after BJP MP Kangana Ranaut advised him against making comments about her youth or private life. Responding to questions on the matter, Ramdev referred to his public standing and contributions but declined to make further remarks about Ranaut. His comments in Haridwar covered the interpretation of 'Vande Mataram', student protests, caste-related issues and the broader question of equal rights and national unity.
