Australian Prime Minister Heckled by Protesters at Sydney Mosque Amid Gaza Tensions
Australian PM Anthony Albanese heckled at Sydney mosque during Eid; security intervenes as protesters shout slogans.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was heckled and asked to “get out” during a visit to the Lakemba Mosque in western Sydney on Friday, while marking Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke accompanied him at the mosque when the incident occurred.
About 15 minutes into the visit, a group of protesters began shouting slogans and interrupting the gathering. Some members of the crowd reportedly called the leaders “genocide supporters” and demanded that they leave the mosque. Security personnel were seen tackling one heckler to the ground before escorting him from the premises, according to videos from the scene.
Following the disruption, Albanese and Burke left the venue amid continued shouts of “shame on you” from protesters. The Prime Minister later described the visit as largely positive, suggesting that the disruption was carried out by a small group rather than reflecting the sentiments of the broader community.

The Albanese government has sought to balance its response to the Gaza conflict, expressing concern for civilians while also supporting Israel’s right to self-defense. This approach has drawn criticism from multiple quarters, with some members of Australia’s Muslim community accusing the government of insufficient support for Palestinians. Other sections of the public have questioned the overall stance on the conflict.
Tensions in Australia have escalated since the Gaza war began in 2023, prompting protests, rallies, and strong reactions from both Muslim and Jewish communities across the country. Earlier this year, Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit to Australia also saw large demonstrations in Sydney, resulting in several arrests.
Despite the disruption, Albanese emphasized the positive aspects of his mosque visit and engagement with the community. Authorities noted that security measures were in place to ensure the safety of officials and attendees, reflecting heightened sensitivities around international conflicts and domestic reactions.
