Australian Man's Viral Video Accusing Elderly Couple of Theft Draws Criticism as Witness Disputes Claim
Witness claims couple paid but missed removing the security tag.
An Australian man has faced criticism online after a video showing him confronting an elderly couple outside a Kmart store went viral. The man, identified as Trent Carter, accused the couple of stealing an item after noticing an anti-theft security sensor attached to a packaged box they were carrying. The couple were seated outside the department store when Carter approached them and questioned whether they had taken the item without paying. The elderly pair appeared confused by the accusation during the interaction.
In the video, Carter can be heard repeatedly asking the couple whether they had stolen the item and pointing towards the security sensor on the package. In a caption accompanying the video, he said he had noticed something unusual while walking past the couple and suggested that they had just left Kmart with the item. The footage was subsequently shared widely on social media, where several users questioned the decision to publicly accuse the elderly pair before establishing whether they had actually committed a theft.
The controversy intensified after a woman who identified herself as Sara Gadhwal claimed she had witnessed the incident inside the store. According to Gadhwal, she was shopping at Kmart when she saw the elderly couple pay for the item at the checkout. She said the couple appeared unaware that the security tag or sticker attached to the package needed to be removed before they left the store. Gadhwal therefore described the incident as an honest mistake rather than theft and urged people not to accuse the couple without knowing the circumstances surrounding what had happened.

The witness's account was later shared on X alongside the video, drawing further attention to the incident. The comments on Carter's original post were reportedly turned off, while users on other platforms debated whether the couple had been unfairly targeted. Some users criticised Carter for confronting the pair without first checking whether the item had been purchased. Others focused on the apparent difficulty the elderly couple had in understanding and responding to the accusation, saying the interaction appeared uncomfortable and potentially humiliating for them.
Some social media users also accused Carter of racist behaviour, pointing to the couple's apparent background and their difficulty communicating during the confrontation. Several comments called for his social media account or post to be reported. The discussion also included hostile responses directed at Carter, although such comments reflected individual reactions online rather than any established finding about the incident. The available account from the witness remains a social media claim, and there is no independent confirmation in the report establishing exactly what happened at the checkout or whether the store staff had addressed the security tag.
The identities and nationality of the elderly couple have not been independently established. Some social media users claimed that they were from Nepal, but that detail could not be verified. The incident has nevertheless prompted a broader online discussion about making accusations in public based on incomplete information, particularly when a security device or other circumstance could have an innocent explanation. The witness's account that the couple had paid for the item has become central to the discussion, while the original video continues to attract criticism over the way the confrontation was handled.
