Assam Police Achieve 93% Charge-Sheet Rate Under BNS

Swift Justice: Assam’s Policing Triumph

Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh announced a remarkable 93% charge-sheet submission rate for cases registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in July 2025, a significant leap from 84.42% in May. The achievement, highlighted during a monthly state crime review meeting on Tuesday, underscores Assam Police’s enhanced efficiency since the BNS replaced the Indian Penal Code in July 2024.

In a post on X, Singh revealed that the conviction rate has surged to 26.72% in 2025, up from a mere 5.5% in 2020, reflecting improved investigation and prosecution processes. The number of pending cases has also plummeted, from 1,54,280 in 2020 to 12,338 in July 2025, signaling faster case disposal. Between July 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025, 15,585 BNS cases were charge-sheeted, with 19,373 disposed of, according to earlier Assam Police data.

“Guided by Hon’ble CM Dr @himantabiswa Sir, @assampolice continues its journey towards better policing with consistent improvement in key policing parameters,” Singh stated, crediting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s oversight. The BNS, designed for victim-centric justice and faster trials, has enabled Assam to streamline investigations, with technology like real-time evidence uploads playing a key role.

This progress aligns with Assam’s broader crime control efforts, including a 75.5% charge-sheet rate for all cases until March 2025, up from 39.4% in 2021. The state has also intensified efforts against crimes like human trafficking and illegal arms smuggling, with 2,300 arrests in 2024 alone. The DGP emphasized ongoing training for officers to adapt to BNS’s provisions, ensuring continued momentum in delivering justice.
