Assam on Alert as Jamiat Leaders Tour Eviction Sites

Police to monitor Jamiat team amid eviction tensions.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced stringent police monitoring of a seven-member Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind delegation visiting Goalpara district, led by president Maulana Mahmood Madani. The visit, aimed at addressing controversial eviction drives, has heightened tensions ahead of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) elections scheduled for early 2026. Sarma, in a post on X, emphasized that the Assam Police will maintain strict surveillance to ensure peace and stability, with the district administration on high alert to prevent any disruption of public order.

The Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, a prominent socio-religious organization, has been vocal in its criticism of Sarma’s aggressive eviction campaigns, which have displaced over 50,000 people, predominantly Bengali-speaking Muslims, since 2021. The group alleges that the evictions, which have cleared more than 160 square kilometers of land, are discriminatory and violate Supreme Court guidelines. The delegation’s visit follows their earlier demands for Sarma’s removal and legal action against him for alleged hate speech, intensifying the political standoff.

Sarma’s government has defended the evictions as necessary to reclaim encroached land and protect Assam’s demographic and cultural identity. However, the Jamiat’s presence in Goalpara, a sensitive region, has raised concerns about potential unrest, prompting the Chief Minister’s swift response. The delegation, including members like Maulana Hakimuddin Kasimi and Mufti Jawed Iqbal Qasmi, plans to visit relief camps like Betbari to support displaced families, further spotlighting the humanitarian fallout of the evictions.

As the BTR elections loom, the situation remains volatile, with Sarma accusing groups like Jamiat and Congress of exploiting the evictions to destabilize Assam. The state’s heightened security measures reflect the delicate balance between maintaining order and addressing the grievances of affected communities, as the debate over land rights and identity politics continues to roil the region.
