Assam MLAs Announce One Month's Salary Donation For Flood Relief

Members of the Assam Legislative Assembly have decided to donate one month's salary each to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to support relief and rehabilitation efforts in flood-affected districts across the state. Announcing the decision in the Assembly on Tuesday, Speaker Biswajit Daimary said legislators from all political parties had unanimously agreed to contribute in view of the unprecedented flood situation that has severely impacted Upper Assam and other regions.

The Speaker also announced that he and the Deputy Speaker would each contribute one month's salary to the relief fund as a gesture of solidarity with those affected by the floods. In addition, officers and employees of the Assam Legislative Assembly Secretariat have voluntarily decided to donate one day's salary to assist the state's ongoing relief operations. The collective contribution is aimed at strengthening the government's response to one of the state's most severe flood crises in recent years.

The announcement comes as floodwaters continue to inundate several districts, disrupting normal life, damaging homes, roads and agricultural land, and forcing thousands of residents to seek shelter in relief camps. According to the latest official flood bulletin, more than four lakh people have been affected across multiple districts, including Sivasagar, Golaghat, Charaideo, Jorhat, Nagaon and Kamrup (Metropolitan). Authorities continue to monitor the situation as rainfall and rising river levels pose additional challenges.

The Assam government has intensified rescue and relief efforts with support from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), district administrations and other agencies. Relief teams have been distributing food, drinking water, medicines and other essential supplies to people staying in relief camps as well as those stranded in affected villages. Officials are also working to restore essential services and assess the extent of damage caused by the floods.

The Chief Minister's Relief Fund is routinely used to provide immediate financial assistance during natural disasters and other emergencies, supporting relief, rehabilitation and recovery measures. Contributions from MLAs, government employees, organisations and individuals are expected to bolster the state's response as authorities continue efforts to assist affected families and rebuild infrastructure. The Assembly's unanimous decision reflects bipartisan support for the relief initiatives being undertaken by the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government.
