Assam Government Announces Counter-Radicalisation Cell To Protect Vulnerable Youth

Assam announces counter-radicalisation cell to protect vulnerable youth.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that the state government will establish a counter-radicalisation cell aimed at protecting vulnerable youth from what he described as extremist influence. The move, according to the Chief Minister, is intended to strengthen preventive mechanisms against attempts to mislead or influence young people.

In a post on social media platform X, Sarma stated that the government would take firm action against any individual or group attempting to “mislead the youth” or negatively impact their future. He emphasised that Assam would respond strongly to such influences and would not allow activities that could harm the state’s younger generation.

The Chief Minister said the proposed counter-radicalisation cell would focus on identifying and addressing early signs of extremist influence among youth. However, he did not provide detailed information regarding the structure, functioning, or timeline for the establishment of the unit, leaving key operational aspects yet to be clarified.

Officials indicated that the initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance internal security and social stability in the state. The cell is expected to work in coordination with existing law enforcement and administrative mechanisms, although formal guidelines and protocols are yet to be released.

The announcement comes amid ongoing discussions in several states about preventive strategies to counter radicalisation and promote youth engagement in constructive activities. The Assam government has said further details regarding the cell’s framework and implementation will be shared in due course.
