Assam Floods Wash Away Railway Tracks, Leave Rail Network Severely Damaged

Severe floods in Assam have caused extensive damage to railway infrastructure, with tracks washed away and train services affected across parts of the Tinsukia Railway Division under the North East Frontier Railway. Railway authorities have deployed teams of engineers, workers and heavy machinery to restore damaged sections and resume normal operations as quickly as possible. The flood situation created major challenges for railway connectivity in eastern Assam, particularly in the districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat. Rising water levels and strong currents damaged railway tracks at several locations, affecting the movement of trains through the region.

The disruption has impacted passengers and freight operations, with railway officials working continuously to repair the affected sections. Nearly two weeks after the floods damaged railway tracks on July 19, restoration efforts remain underway under the supervision of senior railway officials in the Tinsukia division. Teams have been working on rebuilding damaged portions of the track, strengthening the affected areas and ensuring that railway infrastructure is restored safely before services resume fully. A visit to one of the affected sections in Sivasagar district showed railway personnel engaged in repair operations.

Workers and machinery have been deployed at the site to remove damaged material, rebuild track sections and stabilise the railway line. Officials are monitoring progress closely as restoration work continues amid challenging conditions caused by the flood impact. The North East Frontier Railway has been carrying out restoration activities across affected areas to minimise disruption and reconnect important routes. Railway engineers are assessing the extent of damage and prioritising repairs based on operational requirements and safety considerations.
