Assam Flood Crisis Deepens As 68 Dead And Over 5 Lakh Displaced Across State

The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement on Monday, with no fresh fatalities reported in the past 24 hours, although thousands of people continue to remain affected across several districts. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the death toll from this year's floods remains at 68, while 4,45,495 people are still impacted by the disaster. The latest ASDMA bulletin stated that floodwaters have affected six districts of the state, including Sivasagar, Golaghat, Charaideo, Jorhat, Nagaon and Kamrup (Metropolitan).

The number of affected people has declined from more than 5.24 lakh reported across five districts on Sunday, indicating a marginal improvement in the overall situation. Charaideo continues to be the worst-affected district, with 1,88,404 people facing the impact of the floods. It is followed by Sivasagar, where 1,44,461 people remain affected, and Jorhat, which has reported 74,458 affected residents. Authorities have continued monitoring vulnerable areas as water levels gradually recede in some regions.

Relief and rescue operations remain underway across the affected districts. The ASDMA said 90 relief camps are currently operational, providing shelter to 28,695 displaced people. In addition, 94 relief distribution centres have been set up to provide essential supplies and assistance to flood-hit communities. The disaster management authority reported that the Dhansiri (South) river at Numaligarh in Golaghat district continues to flow above the danger level. Officials are closely monitoring river conditions and water levels to prevent further damage, particularly in low-lying areas that remain vulnerable to flooding.

Multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and civil defence personnel, are involved in rescue and relief operations. A total of 67 boats have been deployed in affected areas to assist with evacuation, supply distribution and emergency response efforts. The floods have caused significant damage to agriculture, livestock and infrastructure across Assam. According to the ASDMA, around 37,139.52 hectares of crop area remain submerged, affecting farmers in several districts. The disaster has also resulted in the loss of 26,679 animals, adding to the economic hardship faced by rural communities.

Damage to houses, roads and other infrastructure has been reported from multiple flood-affected areas. Authorities are continuing assessment work to determine the extent of losses and provide necessary support to affected families. Although the decline in affected population and absence of fresh casualties indicate a gradual improvement, officials have warned that the situation remains challenging in several parts of Assam. Relief agencies continue to focus on providing immediate assistance while monitoring river levels and weather conditions to manage any further risks.
