Assam CM Visits Flood-Hit Areas, Reviews Relief And Supply Measures

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday visited flood-affected areas of Golaghat district to review rescue and relief operations and assure displaced families that the government would ensure timely supply of essential items. The visit came as the state continued efforts to support thousands of people affected by the recent floods.

During his visit, Sarma inspected relief camps at Bhaskar Senior Basic School in Kamarbandha and Numaligarh Higher Secondary School, where families forced to leave their homes have been provided temporary shelter. He interacted with residents at the camps and directed officials to address their immediate needs on priority.

At the Kamarbandha relief camp, which is sheltering 178 flood-affected people, the Chief Minister spoke with residents about food, healthcare and other requirements. At the Numaligarh camp, where 182 people, including several children, are staying, Sarma interacted with children and enquired about their well-being.

According to official figures, the floods have affected 25,791 people in Golaghat district. The Chief Minister said the disaster has caused significant difficulties for local communities, damaging agricultural land, affecting livestock and disrupting the daily lives of thousands of families dependent on farming and other livelihoods.

Speaking after the inspection, Sarma said the state government was taking all necessary steps to provide relief and rehabilitation assistance to affected residents. He added that efforts were being coordinated between district authorities and various departments to ensure that essential services reached people in need.

Sarma also said Union Home Minister Amit Shah had contacted him to review the flood situation in Assam. According to the Chief Minister, an inter-ministerial central team will soon visit the state to assess the damage and evaluate the assistance required from the Centre for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts.
