Assam-Arunachal Border Tense After Police Firing Injures 11, Blockade Continues

The situation along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in Dhemaji district remained tense on Thursday amid an indefinite economic blockade launched by the Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK), a prominent student organisation representing Assam’s Mising community. The protest was initiated along with other local groups following an alleged firing incident in which 11 indigenous people from Assam were injured. The blockade is directed against Arunachal Pradesh and has increased tensions in areas close to the inter-state boundary.

During the protest on Wednesday, a confrontation broke out at the Likabali entry point in Assam after stones were allegedly thrown at protesters. The incident escalated into a clash between two groups, prompting the Arunachal Pradesh Police to intervene. Police personnel reportedly fired shots into the air to disperse the crowd and prevent the situation from worsening. The developments have heightened concerns along the border, where movement between the two states has become a major point of contention amid the ongoing protest.

The TMPK and other local organisations have demanded action over the alleged firing that left 11 people from Assam injured. The economic blockade is expected to affect the movement of goods and other activities between the two neighbouring states, although details about the extent of the disruption were not immediately available. The protest has also drawn attention to longstanding sensitivities surrounding communities living along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

On Thursday, Assam Tribal Affairs Minister Ranoj Pegu and Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora met representatives of the TMPK and the All Mising Students’ Union to discuss the incident and the prevailing situation. The meeting came as tensions continued along the border following the confrontation at Likabali. Authorities are expected to monitor the situation closely as the student organisation’s indefinite blockade continues, while efforts are made to prevent further clashes and maintain peace in the border areas.
