ASI Digs Up 22 Ancient Sites Nationwide

Massive excavations reveal India’s rich archaeological heritage.

The Ministry of Culture announced that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is actively excavating 22 sites across the country this year, showcasing a robust commitment to uncovering India’s ancient heritage. The ministry also refuted misleading media reports claiming low ASI expenditure, asserting that budget utilization reflects a meticulous approach to archaeological work.

The ASI operates six dedicated excavation branches in Nagpur, Delhi, Patna, Bhubaneswar, Vadodara, and Mysore, with additional ASI Circles now authorized to conduct digs, expanding the scope of exploration. The budget for excavation and exploration has surged from Rs 6.53 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 15 crore in 2024-25, a 2.3-fold increase, highlighting the government’s focus on preserving India’s cultural wealth.

Excavation, a time-intensive process, involves detailed scientific analysis of artifacts and pottery, producing comprehensive reports to deepen understanding of India’s past. The ASI’s efforts underscore its dedication to rigorous research and preservation, ensuring the nation’s archaeological treasures are studied and safeguarded for future generations.
