Ashok Leyland opens UP's first electric bus plant in Lucknow.
Ashok Leyland has officially launched Uttar Pradesh’s first dedicated electric bus manufacturing plant in Lucknow, marking a significant step in the state’s green mobility and industrial growth. Spread over 70 acres in Sarojini Nagar, the facility is designed to produce electric buses, travellers, and cargo vehicles, while remaining adaptable for alternative fuel and internal combustion platforms in the future.
The plant, inaugurated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and Union Heavy Industries Minister H D Kumaraswamy, was built in just 16 months. Phase 1 of the project, with an investment of ₹252 crore, has an annual production capacity of 2,500 vehicles, which will be scaled up to 5,000 units in subsequent phases. The facility is expected to generate around 3,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Rajnath Singh highlighted Uttar Pradesh’s transformation from focusing solely on law and order to emerging as an industrial hub attracting investment. He praised the state government’s efforts in creating a conducive business environment, linking new projects to job creation and youth employment, and emphasizing the growing defence manufacturing sector, including BrahMos missile production.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the Ashok Leyland plant demonstrates the state’s shift from its earlier “Bimaru” image to becoming one of India’s leading revenue-generating states. He credited improved governance, infrastructure development, and targeted industrial policies for attracting major projects, positioning Uttar Pradesh as a state that converts potential into tangible outcomes.
The Lucknow facility is designed as a green manufacturing hub, achieving IGBC Platinum rating. It features a 1 MW solar power installation, zero liquid discharge processes, full rainwater harvesting systems, and an in-house sewage treatment plant, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable production.
The inauguration also included a short film on the journey of Ashok Leyland and the Hinduja Group, followed by a test ride in an electric bus produced at the plant. With Uttar Pradesh attracting investment proposals worth around ₹45 lakh crore in recent years, the facility strengthens the state’s position as a leader in industrial development and clean mobility initiatives.
