Arunachal CM Pema Khandu Calls 11,000 MW Siang Project A National Strategic Priority
Arunachal CM declares Siang hydropower project a strategic national priority, stressing development and security benefits.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Tuesday described the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), a massive 11,000 MW hydropower initiative, as a project of national strategic importance, underscoring its significance for both the state and the country’s long-term energy and security needs.
The project, estimated at around ₹1.5 lakh crore, is planned along the Siang River—locally known as the Brahmaputra in downstream regions—and is expected to significantly reshape the development landscape of Siang district. During his visit to Riga village, the Chief Minister also launched and laid the foundation for multiple development projects worth ₹196.44 crore aimed at improving infrastructure, connectivity, education, and public services.
Speaking at a public gathering, Pema Khandu emphasised that the hydropower project goes beyond energy generation, calling it vital for national security, flood management, and long-term water regulation. He said the project would help ensure consistent river flow, protect downstream communities, and strengthen India’s preparedness amid evolving upstream developments.

The Chief Minister noted that nearly 70 per cent of affected stakeholders have already signed Memorandums of Understanding for preliminary feasibility and allied studies. He urged remaining landowners and residents to support the initiative, highlighting potential benefits such as job creation, infrastructure growth, business opportunities, and compensation for affected families. He also clarified that the current stage does not represent final project approval and that public consultations will be conducted before any construction decision is taken.
Alongside the hydropower proposal, the state government announced several local infrastructure initiatives, including road upgrades in Riga Township, a new circuit house, an integrated water supply project for Boleng headquarters, and approval for a modern stadium in Siang district. These projects are intended to strengthen regional development while complementing the larger hydropower-driven economic vision.
Reaffirming his broader development roadmap, Khandu called on youth and citizens to contribute to the vision of “Viksit Siang 2047” and “Viksit Arunachal 2047,” emphasising inclusive and sustainable growth. He also thanked local communities for their cooperation during the visit and indicated plans to return to the region later this year for further engagements.
