Army Unveils War Museum in Sensitive LoC Zone, Opens Border to Visitors
The army inaugurates a war museum in Tangdhar and opens the LoC to tourism.
The Indian Army has inaugurated the newly developed “Shaurya Gatha” complex in the frontier region of Tangdhar near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district. The initiative includes a war memorial and museum established at Sand Model Hill near Sadhna Pass in the Shamshabari mountain range. The project is aimed at promoting border tourism while showcasing the history, sacrifices, and military heritage associated with the strategically sensitive LoC region.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Manoj Sinha, who encouraged citizens from across India to visit Tangdhar and experience the region’s natural beauty, cultural significance, and military history. Historically, the area remained largely inaccessible to tourists due to security concerns and its proximity to the LOC. With the opening of the Shaurya Gatha complex, authorities are now seeking to transform the remote sector into an offbeat destination that combines patriotism, history, and local culture.
The Shaurya Gatha initiative was launched in 2024 as a joint project involving the Department of Military Affairs and the United Service Institution of India. The complex has been designed to commemorate the role of the armed forces in defending the region while also preserving accounts of military operations and the lives of soldiers stationed along the border. Officials believe the project could contribute to greater public awareness about the challenges faced by troops deployed in difficult terrain and high-security areas.

Tangdhar, located close to the Line of Control, has long held strategic importance because of its location in north Kashmir. The region has witnessed periods of cross-border tensions and military activity over the years. However, recent efforts by authorities and the Army have increasingly focused on integrating tourism, infrastructure development, and community outreach initiatives to boost local livelihoods and improve civilian engagement in border areas while maintaining security preparedness.
