Army to Procure 850 Kamikaze Drones After Operational Success in Operation Sindoor

Army boosts forces with Rs 2000 crore loitering munitions.

The Indian Army is advancing procurement of approximately 850 kamikaze drones, known as loitering munitions, along with launchers valued at Rs 2000 crore, informed by operational successes during Operation Sindoor. This fast-track initiative, sourced exclusively from indigenous manufacturers, aims to enhance precision strike capabilities for the Army, Navy, Air Force, and special forces, with approval expected from the Defence Acquisition Council later this month.

Operation Sindoor, launched in May 2025 as retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack that killed 26 civilians, showcased the effectiveness of drone warfare. Indian forces neutralized seven of nine targeted terrorist facilities linked to groups like Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba on the first day, later extending strikes to Pakistani military positions, resulting in significant casualties and infrastructure damage.

The acquisition aligns with India's self-reliance in defence, prioritizing domestic production to deliver affordable, high-precision systems capable of extended loitering, target acquisition, and explosive impact. This initial batch supports integration with existing command systems, providing real-time surveillance and kinetic options with reduced risk to personnel in border and internal security operations.

Currently operating various loitering munitions, the Army plans to induct nearly 30,000 units in the coming years, equipping every infantry battalion with a dedicated Ashni platoon for specialized drone operations in conventional and counterinsurgency roles.

This development marks a strategic evolution in non-contact warfare, institutionalizing drone-centric tactics proven in recent conflicts and strengthening deterrence against cross-border threats.
