Army Personnel Finally Get Instagram Access – With One Major Restriction

Indian Army allows personnel to join Instagram but only as passive observers without posting or interacting.

The Indian Army has revised its social media guidelines, allowing personnel to sign up on Instagram for the first time. However, soldiers can only use the platform as “passive observers,” meaning they can view content but cannot post, comment, like, or engage in any form of user-generated activity.

This move aims to enhance the awareness of Army personnel in the “digital age of information” while preventing inadvertent leaks of sensitive information. The updated guidelines apply to all ranks and were introduced a few days ago, sources in the defence establishment confirmed.

Previously, Army personnel were permitted to use X (formerly Twitter) under similar restrictions. They could view posts but were barred from posting, reposting, or commenting. The new Instagram policy aligns with this approach, ensuring personnel remain informed without creating digital footprints that could compromise operational security.

The change reflects the Army’s recognition of the evolving information landscape. Social media platforms allow personnel to observe events, trends, and news both domestically and internationally, keeping them digitally fluent while mitigating risks associated with sharing or reacting impulsively online.

Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi emphasized the importance of responsible digital engagement during the Chanakya Defence Dialogue in November. He highlighted the distinction between “reacting impulsively” and “responding thoughtfully,” encouraging soldiers to use smartphones and social media to stay connected and informed safely.

The new guidelines also align with the Army’s vision of grooming a tech-savvy, socially conscious, and globally connected force. While personnel can now explore Instagram content, strict restrictions ensure that operational security and sensitive information remain uncompromised.
