Army And Assam Rifles Conduct Joint Flood Management Exercises In Northeast States
Joint drills boost flood rescue readiness across Northeast states.
The Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and disaster response agencies have conducted a series of joint flood relief and disaster management drills across Tripura, Mizoram, and other northeastern states, aiming to strengthen preparedness ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, officials said on Tuesday.
A defence spokesperson in Agartala said the Indian Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) carried out a comprehensive mock flood rescue exercise involving civil administration representatives and local stakeholders. The drill was designed to simulate real-life flood emergencies, including large-scale inundation scenarios, stranded civilians, and disruption of essential services. The objective was to test coordination mechanisms and improve response efficiency during natural disasters.
The exercise included multiple rescue and relief operations such as evacuation of affected civilians, deployment of rescue boats, provision of emergency medical aid, and establishment of temporary relief camps. Officials said teams also practiced the transportation of essential supplies to cut-off areas, ensuring that relief can be delivered quickly during actual emergencies. The coordinated activity was used to validate standard operating procedures between the participating agencies.

According to defence officials, personnel from the Army and NDRF demonstrated specialised techniques including casualty evacuation, communication protocols, and joint command coordination. The drill also helped assess interoperability between agencies and identify areas for improvement in real-time disaster response. Authorities said such exercises are crucial for refining coordination in flood-prone regions like the Northeast, where heavy monsoon rainfall often leads to severe disruptions.
In Mizoram, the Assam Rifles conducted a five-day boatmanship training programme for its personnel deployed across various units in the state as part of monsoon preparedness. The training focused on boat handling, river navigation, flood rescue operations, and safety procedures, along with practical sessions on operating in fast-flowing and difficult river conditions.
The exercise concluded with a practical river-crossing and rescue demonstration, validating the skills acquired during training. Officials said the initiative reflects the Assam Rifles’ commitment to maintaining high operational readiness in disaster situations. As “Sentinels of the North East,” the force continues to support civil authorities during emergencies, reinforcing coordinated disaster response efforts in the region.
