Anurag Kumar Appointed Delhi Police Commissioner, Replaces Satish Golcha

Anurag Kumar named Delhi Police Commissioner after IB tenure.

Senior IPS officer Anurag Kumar has been appointed as the new Delhi Police Commissioner, marking his return to the Delhi Police after serving for more than two decades with the Intelligence Bureau (IB). A 1994-batch AGMUT cadre officer, Kumar formally took charge from outgoing Police Commissioner Satish Golcha on Friday. His appointment marks a homecoming, as he last served in the Delhi Police in 2005 before being deputed to the Intelligence Bureau.

A native of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, Kumar holds a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree and began his career in the Delhi Police in September 1994. During his initial years in the force, he served in several important operational and administrative positions, including as Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and later Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). His experience in policing the national capital laid the foundation for a distinguished career in law enforcement and intelligence.

In 2005, while serving as Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), Kumar was deputed to the Intelligence Bureau. Over the next 20 years, he held a series of key assignments within India's premier internal intelligence agency. During his tenure, he was posted at the Intelligence Bureau headquarters in New Delhi and was entrusted with responsibilities relating to Jammu and Kashmir, handling matters connected with internal security and intelligence operations.

Following his repatriation to the parent AGMUT cadre, Kumar returned to the Delhi Police and has now assumed charge as the city's top police officer. His extensive experience in intelligence gathering, security coordination and internal administration is expected to strengthen policing strategies in the national capital. His appointment comes at a time when Delhi Police continues to focus on law and order, counter-terrorism preparedness, cybercrime prevention and public safety.

The transition of leadership was completed with Kumar taking over from outgoing Commissioner Satish Golcha. Senior officers and personnel welcomed the new commissioner as he assumed responsibility for one of India's largest metropolitan police forces. The Delhi Police plays a crucial role in maintaining security across the national capital, which houses key government institutions, diplomatic missions and major public events throughout the year.

Anurag Kumar's return to the Delhi Police after two decades in the Intelligence Bureau represents the culmination of a career that combines field policing with extensive intelligence experience. His appointment is expected to bring valuable strategic insight to the force as it addresses evolving security challenges, enhances public policing initiatives and strengthens coordination among various law enforcement and intelligence agencies operating in the national capital.
