Andhra Student Jumps From Hostel Building, Dies; Police Probe Suspected Suicide Amid Family’s Allegations

Nursing student dies after jumping from hostel; family alleges college negligence as police investigate suspected suicide.

A 19-year-old second-year BSc Nursing student, Pallavi, died on Friday morning after jumping from the fourth floor of her hostel building at PES College in Kuppam, Chittoor district, on Thursday evening. CCTV footage captured the tragic moment when she leapt from the building, prompting an immediate response from fellow students and staff who rushed her to the hospital. Despite emergency treatment, she succumbed to her injuries hours later, police confirmed.

The teenager’s distraught family has directly blamed the college administration for the death, alleging gross negligence in student welfare and inadequate mental-health support systems in the hostel. They claim Pallavi had been showing signs of emotional distress that went unnoticed or unaddressed by the authorities. Local police have registered a case of suspicious death and launched a detailed probe, including examination of the hostel’s safety protocols and counselling facilities.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the campus and reignited parental anxiety over student safety across educational institutions in Andhra Pradesh. It follows a disturbing pattern: earlier in November, two engineering students from Sreenivasa Institute of Technology and Management Studies in the same district attempted suicide, resulting in one death and leaving another in critical condition. Last week, a 20-year-old engineering student took his own life in the neighbouring Srikakulam district.

With at least four student suicides or attempts reported in coastal Andhra within a month, educationists and child-rights activists are demanding urgent measures, including mandatory on-campus counsellors, 24-hour helplines, and stricter enforcement of anti-ragging and mental-health guidelines. As investigations continue in Kuppam, grieving parents and alarmed students are calling for systemic changes to prevent more young lives from being lost to preventable despair.
