Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Amendment Act 2026 Passed; Amaravati Confirmed as State Capital
President Murmu's assent to the amendment act legally confirms Amaravati as Andhra Pradesh's capital.
In a major political and administrative development, Amaravati has been officially granted legal status as the capital of Andhra Pradesh after Droupadi Murmu gave assent to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026. The move provides formal backing from the Centre, ending years of uncertainty over the state’s capital status.
The decision was welcomed by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who reaffirmed that Amaravati is the rightful capital of the state. In a public statement, Naidu declared that the legal recognition marks a definitive moment, ensuring that the status of the capital cannot be altered in the future following the Centre’s approval.
The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which designates Amaravati as the capital, was recently passed by Parliament before receiving presidential assent. The legislation is seen as a decisive step in resolving long-standing political debates and administrative challenges surrounding the location of the state’s capital since the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014.

Naidu also claimed that the decision reflects broad national support for Amaravati, stating that the city has emerged stronger despite political opposition and controversies. He alleged that attempts were made in the past to derail the project, including campaigns questioning its viability and safety, as well as representations made to international institutions such as the World Bank.
The chief minister further criticised opposition parties, particularly the YSR Congress Party, accusing them of attempting to undermine Amaravati’s development. He asserted that the new law effectively neutralises such efforts and secures the city’s position as the administrative and political hub of the state.
With the legal framework now in place, the focus is expected to shift towards accelerating infrastructure development and governance activities in Amaravati. The decision is likely to have long-term implications for urban planning, investment, and administrative stability in Andhra Pradesh.
