Andhra Pradesh Braces for Severe Heatwave, Temperatures May Reach 47 Degrees Today
Andhra Pradesh faces a severe heatwave with temperatures reaching 47°C; authorities issue health warnings.
Andhra Pradesh is bracing for an intense heatwave as temperatures across several districts continue to rise sharply, with authorities warning that mercury levels may touch 47 degrees Celsius in some regions on Wednesday. The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) said severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist across multiple districts, prompting officials to issue advisories urging people to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours. The state has already recorded some of the highest temperatures of the season over the past two days.
According to APSDMA Managing Director Prakhar Jain, the highest temperature recorded on Tuesday was 45.6 degrees Celsius at Piduguralla in the Palnadu district. Gudur in the Nellore district recorded 44.9 degrees Celsius, while Kankipadu in the Krishna district registered 44.5 degrees Celsius. Officials stated that temperatures crossed the 41-degree Celsius mark in 233 mandals spread across 23 districts, reflecting the widespread impact of the ongoing heatwave conditions across the state.
The disaster management authority reported that Palnadu district experienced the highest heat impact, affecting 26 mandals, followed by Nellore with 25 mandals and Prakasam with 23 mandals. Other heavily impacted areas included the Markapuram, Krishna, Tirupati, and Nandyal districts. Authorities warned that several coastal Andhra districts, including Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Konaseema, East and West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Bapatla, Palnadu, and Prakasam, could witness temperatures ranging between 45 and 47 degrees Celsius during the day.

The APSDMA further stated that temperatures between 43 and 44 degrees Celsius are expected in districts such as Nellore, Kurnool, Nandyal, Chittoor, and Tirupati, while parts of Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai, YSR Kadapa, and Annamayya districts may record temperatures ranging from 41 to 43 degrees Celsius. Officials also warned of severe heatwave conditions in at least 71 mandals and heatwave impact in another 277 mandals across the state, indicating that a large section of the population remains vulnerable to extreme weather exposure.
Authorities have advised residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses and avoid stepping outdoors between 11 am and 4 pm unless absolutely necessary. Special caution has been issued for elderly citizens, pregnant women, children, and individuals suffering from blood pressure, diabetes, and heart-related illnesses. Residents have been encouraged to remain hydrated, wear light clothing, and reduce exposure to direct sunlight as health officials continue monitoring the situation closely.
Despite the severe heat conditions, APSDMA indicated there could be limited relief in some parts of the state. Officials said a trough extending from Karnataka and Rayalaseema toward South Coastal Andhra may trigger isolated light rainfall and thunderstorms in parts of the Rayalaseema region over the next 24 hours. While the expected weather activity may temporarily ease temperatures in select areas, authorities warned that overall heatwave conditions are likely to continue across much of Andhra Pradesh in the coming days.
