Andhra Blast Survivor's Wife Appeals for Financial Assistance
Vetlapalem blast survivor battles injuries; wife appeals for aid.
A survivor of the devastating fireworks factory blast in Vetlapalem village of Kakinada district continues to struggle with recovery and financial hardship nearly a month after the explosion that killed dozens of workers, while his wife has appealed for government support to help their family cope, local reports said. The explosion on February 28, 2026 at the Surya Sri Fireworks Centre in Vetlapalem occurred amid production for local festivals and weddings, killing dozens of workers and injuring others amid thick smoke and chaos. Preliminary investigations found that excessive explosive materials and unsafe practices may have contributed to the disaster, which authorities have described as one of the worst fireworks factory accidents in recent memory.
Among the injured, Yamagiri Daveedu, a skilled worker who had long been employed at the unit, was left with severe burns and remained the sole patient still undergoing treatment at Kakinada Government General Hospital as of late March. Medical staff said he has shown gradual improvement and may be discharged soon, but his road to full recovery remains challenging.
Daveedu, the primary breadwinner for his family — which includes his wife Vijayakumari, three children, and his elderly mother — has faced mounting financial strain since the blast. The family has been travelling daily from Samalkota to Kakinada for his treatment, losing daily wages and struggling to cover living expenses, hospital costs, and basic necessities amid the prolonged hospital stay.

While the state government has delivered compensation to approximately 20 of the affected families, eight families were still awaiting aid at the time of the report. In interviews with local media, Daveedu’s wife appealed to authorities not only for pending compensation but also for long‑term employment opportunities or job placement assistance to help her family survive in the absence of her husband’s income.
Experts and safety advocates have said the tragedy underscores wider concerns over industrial safety standards in fireworks and cracker manufacturing units in Andhra Pradesh, a region with a long history of such accidents, and have urged stronger enforcement of regulations to prevent future disasters. As survivors like Daveedu and their families await support, community members and rights groups continue to press for more comprehensive relief measures and long‑term rehabilitation assistance from state authorities.
