An Engineering Marvel! PM Modi Set to Open Pamban Bridge On Ram Navami

PM Modi to Unveil India’s First Vertical Lift Sea Bridge in Rameswaram Tomorrow

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate India’s pioneering vertical lift sea bridge in Rameswaram on April 6, a Rs 550 crore marvel linking the island to the mainland.

The new Pamban Bridge, set to open on Ram Navami, promises to blend engineering brilliance with cultural resonance, spotlighted by a Railways promo video touting its “breathtaking view.” Alongside, Modi will flag off a Rameswaram-Tambaram train and dedicate projects worth over Rs 8,300 crore, including key road upgrades like the four-laning of Walajapet-Ranipet (NH-40) and Viluppuram-Puducherry (NH-332).

The 2.08 km bridge, built by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), features 99 spans and a 72.5-meter vertical lift span rising 17 meters—demonstrated tomorrow as a Coast Guard ship passes beneath. Designed for dual tracks and a 100-year lifespan at 80 kmph, per RVNL Director MP Singh, it boasts stainless steel reinforcement and a polysiloxane coating to defy the Palk Strait’s harsh marine conditions.

Replacing the 1914 British-built cantilever, it mirrors global icons like the Golden Gate Bridge in engineering prowess.

Modi’s day includes a 12:45 pm visit to the Ramanathaswamy Temple, tying the bridge to its Ramayana roots—near where Ram Setu began. Security blankets Rameswaram as the PM also launches rail and road initiatives to boost connectivity, tourism, and local economies. Singh assures safety, backed by IIT vetting and a high-level committee, making this a landmark moment for Tamil Nadu and Indian infrastructure.
