Amit Shah To Visit Ladakh For Development Review And Buddha Purnima Events

Amit Shah begins two-day Ladakh visit to review projects, attend Buddha Purnima, and meet stakeholders.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to begin a two-day visit to Ladakh starting Thursday, with the trip expected to focus on development initiatives, administrative review, and continued political engagement with regional stakeholders. The visit comes at a time when the Union Territory is undergoing sustained discussions on governance, development priorities, and local aspirations following its reorganisation in 2019.

According to officials, Shah will arrive in Leh later in the day and is scheduled to participate in religious observances on May 1, coinciding with Buddha Purnima. During the occasion, he will pay respects to the sacred relics of Lord Buddha, which are being displayed as part of a special exposition in Ladakh. The event is expected to draw attention to the region’s deep cultural and spiritual heritage, which remains central to its identity.

Beyond the religious engagements, the Home Minister is also expected to review key development projects underway in the Union Territory. These include infrastructure expansion, connectivity improvements, and administrative initiatives aimed at enhancing governance in the high-altitude region. While the administration has not released a detailed itinerary, Shah is also likely to interact with prominent citizens and representatives from various sectors.

The visit is being closely watched in the context of ongoing political dialogue between the Centre and local groups. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has announced that a meeting of the Sub-Committee will be held on May 22 to continue discussions with the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). This follows earlier rounds of talks held in New Delhi on February 4, with the upcoming meeting scheduled after a gap of nearly three and a half months.

Officials have described the renewed engagement as part of an ongoing effort to maintain structured dialogue with Ladakh-based stakeholders. The process aims to address key demands related to statehood, constitutional safeguards, and regional development concerns raised by local organisations since the creation of the Union Territory.

Ladakh Lieutenant Governor B. D. Mishra had earlier confirmed Shah’s visit, noting that it reflects the government’s continued focus on the region’s development. He also highlighted that the Buddha Purnima observances and related spiritual exposition underline Ladakh’s cultural significance, while the parallel political dialogue process is intended to ensure a “constructive and enduring solution” for the aspirations of its people.
